Use of Mobile Health to Improve Maternal Healthcare in the Hohoe Municipality

This research proposes an intervention aimed at improving pregnant women’s attendance to Antenatal Care (ANC) and ensuring successful deliveries. The intervention involves the development of a mobile app called AntelApp, designed to enhance maternal healthcare in underserved areas of the Hohoe municipality. The app serves multiple purposes: it sends reminders for upcoming ANC visits, provides nutritional information, and allows pregnant women to report abnormal symptoms to a trained midwife via the app. This will help reduce the need for unnecessary travel to healthcare facilities unless the situation requires in-person care. Additionally, the app uses voice SMS to send motivational messages, supporting the mental well-being of pregnant women throughout their pregnancy journey. Ultimately, this initiative aims to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in the Hohoe municipality.

The main objective is to design a mobile health (m-health) intervention that utilizes technology to improve maternal healthcare access in rural communities within the Hohoe municipality. Specific objectives are to:

1) Assess the level of adherence to ANC attendance and skilled delivery care among pregnant women.
2) Identify the barriers to healthcare access faced by pregnant women.
3) Evaluate the impact of the m-health intervention on ANC attendance.
4) Determine the effect of the m-health intervention on skilled delivery care within the Hohoe municipality.
